WHO IS
KARMA JIU JITSU
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a modern martial art that focuses on ground fighting - using superior leverage and technique to bring your opponent to the ground and submit them. As the BJJ practitioner increases their skill, it becomes easier for smaller players to subdue larger, stronger adversaries - this makes jiu jitsu a perfect martial art for kids.
Whether you are looking to learn jiu jitsu for sport, to get in shape, for self-defense or because Joe Rogan said it was cool, Karma Jiu Jitsu is the place for you and your family. Our focus is on "playing" Jiu Jitsu, it is meant to be fun and a way to connect with your community. All while setting a foundation of key principles for life - Integrity, Accountability, Compassion, Respect, Empathy, Indomitable Spirit, Courage, and Discipline.
About Raechel
Coach Raechel, a Fernando "Gringo" Zulick Brown Belt, was first introduced to martial arts through movies and TV as a child. She was inspired by movies such as 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and 'Three Ninjas' as well as the show 'Dragonball Z'. As a teenager she enrolled in the local Tai Kwon Do dojo, and switched to wrestling once she entered high school. As an adult she returned to Tae Kwon Do, which then led her to finding Jiu Jitsu in 2015. Jiu Jitsu gave the community she needed as a single mother of two. When her children were old enough they started training Jiu Jitsu, which is now a huge part of their everyday lives, you will even find Jessle and Zedden on the mats helping to coach the kids classes. Ten years later Raechel continues to train, and has a large focus on giving back to the jiu jitsu community, especially women in jiu jitsu.
About Alan
Coach Alan, a US Army Veteran, has traveled the world learning and sharing jiu jitsu concepts and techniques. He has trained jiu jitsu in seven countries on three continents. He has spent countless hours learning from Chris Hauter, Rafael Lovato Jr., John Danaher, Roberto Correa de Lima aka Gordo, Will Dorman, Ryan Walden, Heather Raftery, Rich Sab, Joshua Janis, Fernando “Gringo” Zulick, Kieran Kichuk and many more. In addition to being a jiu jitsu coach, Alan is an E-RYT yoga instructor. He has an intricate understanding of body mechanics and loves providing the necessary details to improve the jiu jitsu of others. You will often hear Alan say, “Jiu jitsu is not about jiu jitsu.” Embodying this philosophy helps take your jiu jitsu off the mats and into the world.
About Steve
Coach Steve, a Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ) Black Belt under Fernando Zulick, has been training and coaching children since 2011. A lifelong martial artist, Steve turned to BJJ when his son was seven years old to help him develop self-confidence, resilience, strength and flexibility. In an era where all interactions are captured on camera, Steve saw the value in providing his son skills to defend himself and control an attacker without resorting to violent punches or kicks. The biggest and most surprising benefit proved to be a positive community like no other.
As an adult educator in the field of Occupational Health and Safety, Steve understands the value in implementing strategies to minimize risk and applies this practice in both his professional and personal life. Steve can often be heard quoting Miyamoto Musashi: “It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war”.
JIU JITSU & KARMA
Karma is regarded as the natural law of cause and effect that governs the universe. Karma literally means ACTION and karma is both the power latent within actions, and the results our actions bring. In simple terms, what does karma mean? It means that whatever we do with our body, speech, or mind, will have a corresponding result. Each action, even the smallest, is pregnant with consequences. It is said, that even a little poison can cause death, and even a tiny seed can become a huge tree.
The law of karma is inevitable and infallible, whenever we harm others, we are directly harming ourselves, and whenever we bring happiness to others, we are bringing ourselves future happiness. When we practice jiujitsu, each movement or action we make naturally causes a (re)action from our partner. When we do well, we are able to take actions that benefit us and further our goals. If we move inefficiently or recklessly the consequence can be that we lose our position, advantage, or at worst our training partner. We are constantly deciding how to move and are making judgements about the best interests of ourselves and our training partners. When we are doing jiujitsu, just like life, we should focus on the things that we can control. We quickly learn the only thing we can control is ourself.
Karma is not tangible, transferable, or sentient. Karma does not decay like external things, or ever become inoperative. It cannot be destroyed by time, fire, or water. Karma is not fatalistic or predetermined. Karma means our ability to create and to change. It’s creative, because we can determine how and why we act. We can change. The future is in our hands, and in the hands of our heart.
